Als wees van de Tweede Wereldoorlog groeide hij op in armoede. Tijdens de turbulente wederopbouw van Duitsland veroorzaakte hij een omwenteling in de seksindustrie: hij richtte een bordeel op dat maatschappelijke normen uitdaagde en inzicht verschafte in de tot dan toe verborgen wereld van vrouwelijke seksualiteit. Wat Engel uniek maakte, was zijn respectvolle behandeling van zijn werkneemsters; en hij was de eerste in de geschiedenis die hen sociale verzekeringen en pensioenrechten bood. Wat volgde waren turbulente tijden en grote sociale veranderingen, tegen de achtergrond van de wederopbouw van Duitsland; een tijd van seksuele vrijheid. Engel richtte een nieuw soort bordeel op dat ons vandaag meer inzicht geeft in de&nbsp;&nbsp;verborgen wereld van de vrouwelijke seksualiteit. De film deconstrueert de vooroordelen en sociale zeden uit die tijd.
